Divorce Review
(Before I start to write this review. I’d just like to point out that when listening to this record I realised this is the only new release I have gone out and bought from a band I do not know. This annoys me, I’m going to rectify this situation.)
I first heard this band at some party a few months back but, when I woke in the morning i couldn’t remember what they were called. Thankfully a few weeks back the NME ran the ‘Nae-Wave’ article, the article itself was a typical NME trying to spark a scene that doesn’t exist piece of shit. But 2 of the bands they spoke about are fucking cool. Divorce and Ultimate Thrush.
I looked at the picture of Divorce and was so taken a-back. I couldn’t tell whether I was intrigued or disgusted. Although usually the 2 go hand in hand.
I rushed out and bought the record and it’s a fucking rocker. The first thing I thought when the needle hit the record was that the NME described it as was pretty easy choices but not really on it, but generally what do you expect. They really remind me of Arab on Radar and a lot of the American bands coming out of Rhode Island a few years ago and a lot of the American noise bands on Three One G.
The lead singers voice is pretty good. It sounds intense but still niave and a bit of an obvious attempt to simply match the music. This is probably due to this being their first record, but I feel her voice and delivery will develop in the coming releases.
The best songs are the opening track ‘Early Christianity’ and last track ‘Scissor Fight’. the former is a distorted groover with a marching beat and a guitar part that sounds like it’s cut apart on tape, although I doubt this is how they recorded it. The repeated lyric of ‘We’ve got lovers and things, We’ve got thieves and whores’, sets the president for the next three songs. The last song has a more metal feel about it, a lot of tom work and cymbals, then the song breaks down towards the end and fucking loses it. its a banger.
Go and buy this record. It’s released on Optimo.
